About SCFBio

Pioneering computational biology in India since 2002, we are dedicated to advancing research in genomics, proteomics, and drug design through high-performance computing.

Our Journey

The Supercomputing Facility for Bioinformatics & Computational Biology (SCFBio) was established at IIT Delhi in July 2002. It was founded through the generous support of key national agencies including the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Department of Science & Technology (DST), and the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), along with IIT Delhi itself. Under the guidance of Prof. B. Jayaram, the facility was built with a clear and ambitious vision for the future of computational science in India.

In December 2013, our commitment to excellence was recognized when DBT designated SCFBio as a **"Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bioinformatics & Computational Biology"**. Through continuous upgrades, including the recent addition of a first-of-its-kind liquid-immersed cooling system, our compute capacity has grown to over 65 TFLOPS, supported by more than 200 Terabytes of storage.

Our Vision

A National Supercomputing Hub

To establish and maintain a nodal facility for supercomputing, making cutting-edge resources freely accessible to the bioinformatics community across the nation and the globe.

Innovate and Develop

To develop novel scientific methods and create new software for genome analysis, ab initio protein structure prediction, and active-site directed drug design.

Key Accomplishments

Our research focuses on solving grand challenge problems, from interpreting genomic DNA to computer-aided drug discovery.

Genomics: Chemgenome

Interpreting the language of genomic DNA from a new physico-chemical perspective, with the goal of reading genomes like novels.

Proteomics: Bhageerath

Addressing the protein structure prediction problem. We are the only Indian participant in the CASP Olympics' server category, ranking among the best for low-resolution models.

Drug Discovery: Sanjeevini

A complete, freely accessible software suite for CADD. We have developed and published molecules against Malaria, Alzheimer's, and various viral infections.

Workflow from Genome to Drug

Our Infrastructure

A powerful and continuously upgraded environment designed for intensive life science research.

  • 768 Core Linux Cluster (Liquid Cooled) 24 nodes with 96 GB RAM each, plus a 512 GB RAM high-memory node for genomics, all housed in liquid-immersion cooling technology.
  • AMD Clusters A 328-core Solaris cluster, a 288-core Linux cluster, and a 104-processor cluster provide robust and varied computing environments.
  • GPU Computing Cluster A dedicated cluster with 8 NVIDIA K20 GPU cards for accelerated machine learning and molecular dynamics computations.
  • High-Performance Storage 200 Terabytes of parallel file system-based storage to handle large-scale biological data.
  • Power Backup Redundant power supply with 2 x 40 KVA UPS systems ensuring uninterrupted operation.
  • High-Speed Connectivity A dedicated 30 Mbps internet connection on an optical fibre link for fast and reliable data transfer.
